Macallan Scotch is generally known for its 12-year-old variety, though the 18-year-old bottle has recently grown in popularity with Scotch drinkers. Distilled for generations, the Macallan Scotch distillery follows a traditionalist craftman-led philosophy for distilling the world famous whiskey and emphasis is placed on the quality and character of the wood barrels where the whiskey ages. Scotch whisky in particular derives an incredible variety of nuances and flavors from the wood in which it ages.
Macallan Scotch is well regarded in part because the aging process in many of the hardwood barrels produces a whiskey considered less smoky than many others. The Select Oak series is reasonably priced and without the more musky or woody flavors for which seasoned whisky drinkers may yearn. The Select Oak series comes, in larger proportion from the first-fill sherry oak casks and at 80 proof, it´s a slightly sweeter scotch with a long finish. Of course, a number of other lines of Macallan Scotch can please more seasoned enthusiasts. Still one of the best known and best regarded of Scotch whiskeys around the world, Macallan Scotch is not always widely available in corner spirits shops, but the brand has its place in the duty free shops of airports world wide.
Macallan Scotch is today a one of the core products of the Edrington Group Ltd which has moved to more prominently market Macallan Scotch as one of its most profitable brands. Both 15-year-old and 30-year-old bottles vie for the attention of some of the world´s most dedicated Scotch whiskey fans, and 50- and 60-year old bottles have also set sales records, and records for auction sales prices, in the past decade.
